who we are
About Us
We exist because theater should never be a luxury reserved for a few. Today, we're a community of artists, volunteers, and supporters who prove that classic theater thrives when it's made for everyone. We don't separate ourselves from the people we serve. We're our own audience. We cast our neighbors. We build sets in borrowed spaces and perform in unexpected places. This is theater rooted in the real community it serves, not imposed from outside it.
We are Bard in Brevard.

Our Mission
Through our performances, workshops, and partnerships, we aim to build community through storytelling, nurture local talent, and make the arts a vital part of life in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Whether you’re a lifelong theatergoer or seeing your first Shakespeare play, we invite you to bring a blanket or chair, sit beneath the stars, and discover the Bard—Brevard-style.
Our Vision
A community where everyone sees themselves reflected on stage. Where Shakespeare's words become a catalyst for understanding our own stories. Where barriers to participation dissolve, and theater is woven into the fabric of how we connect, create, and care for each other. Where live performance reminds us of our shared humanity.
Our Story
Bard in Brevard was born from a belief that Shakespeare belongs to everyone. Founded by theater artists who wanted to deepen the conversation with classic texts, we started by asking simple questions: What if we wove Brevard into our plays? What if we cast beyond tradition? What if theater could be a genuine gathering place? From those conversations, our community grew. Today, we're a thriving ensemble of artists, volunteers, and supporters who share one mission: making transformative theater accessible to all.
What we Do
Our Promise to Brevard
Each season, we produce full theatrical productions of Shakespeare plays, creatively integrating themes and scenes to deepen and expand the storytelling. We rehearse collaboratively, cast broadly, and bring stories to the stage that surprise audiences and ourselves. We also teach workshops, host community performances, and create pathways for anyone interested in theater to learn, create, and perform.
community productions
We create collaborative theater that brings to life Shakespearean texts and celebrates diverse interpretations. Our productions challenge tradition, invite new audiences, and empower artists of all experience levels to step into roles that matter. On our stage, everyone belongs.

We offer community performances, workshops, and education programs that invite participation from across our community. We believe in removing financial and cultural barriers so that art becomes something everyone can experience and create together.
