Volunteer with Bard in Brevard
Bard in Brevard thrives because of volunteers. We're a community-driven theater dedicated to bringing Shakespeare to life and making live performance accessible to everyone. Whether you want to perform, design, build, teach, or support our work behind the scenes, there's a place for you. Work a few hours, a few days, or as much as you like. We always welcome new faces and new enthusiasm. Come join our family and volunteer.
Build our Sets
Every Shakespeare production requires a new set. On the first day of construction, our designer brings the plan to show the crew. Some sets are simple; others are more complex. The more hands we have, the faster it gets built. If you can swing a hammer, use a drill, saw a board, or haul lumber, we need you. Construction days usually start at 10 AM and run through 2 PM.
Paint our sets
Once the set is built, it must be painted. Some sets require simple base coats; others need special effects like weathered stone, foliage, or architectural details. If you can dip a brush into a can of paint, we'd like your help. If you have a talent for special painting effects, we really need you.
Costumes and wardrobes
Costuming requires people to search our costume room and source pieces for each show. If we don't have what we need in-house, we visit stores, thrift shops, and sometimes local attics. We occasionally sew or alter costumes too. Once outfits are ready, the wardrobe crew ensures costumes are placed where needed, helps performers change, and handles quick repairs during rehearsals and performances.
distribute brochure and posters
Local restaurants and shops display posters for each show. Distributing them takes a few hours and involves posting at pre-arranged businesses. We create brochures once each season that get dropped off at hotels, visitor centers, and community spaces. It's a great way to get the word out about our productions.
Run our light board
Some shows have simple lighting cues; others are more complex. Everything is computerized and takes just minutes to learn. You'll need to be present during the show, alert and watchful, but it mainly requires pushing buttons on cue. It's straightforward and crucial to the magic on stage.
operate our sound board
Some productions have minimal sound; others have many cues. You might ring an on-stage phone, create sound effects, or play pre-show and intermission music. Nearly all of this is computerized, requiring just a "go" button push. It demands focus and some rehearsal time, but it's manageable and essential.
prop master and prop crew
We need people who love to shop. We source everything from a silver goblet to a lute, items that performers use on stage. Once acquired, the crew "sets" the stage before performances, during scene changes, and at intermission. Some of this work happens in front of the audience, adding to the theatrical experience.
concessions
During each production run, we serve refreshments at intermission. Volunteers arrive a few minutes before intermission, set out drinks and snacks, and clean up after. It takes about an hour of your time but provides a valued community service and a chance to connect with audiences.
stage manager
All productions have a Stage Manager who runs the show once it opens. This is the Director's right hand, helping with rehearsals, coordinating the props crew, wardrobe, lights, and sound. If you're organized and detail-oriented, this role is for you.
producer
The Producer assembles all the people connected with the production except the director and actors. You'll find the crew for set building, painting, lighting, sound, props, and other technical aspects. You'll arrange production meetings and oversee the production budget. This is a role for someone well-organized, problem-solving, decisive, and able to work with many personalities.
special events
This includes our annual meetings, celebration events, and special fundraising gatherings. Tasks involve finding locations, arranging catering if needed, decorating, and coordinating entertainment. If you enjoy hosting and creating memorable experiences, this could be perfect for you.
perform or direct
Every show needs performers and a director. If you enjoy acting, we encourage you to attend auditions. If you're a director, we need you too. We also welcome choreographers and musicians who can support our Shakespeare productions.
community events
We bring Shakespeare to underserved communities throughout the region, performing in parks, community centers, and local venues. Our cast of performers travels in small groups. No experience necessary. If you'd like to perform Shakespeare in unexpected places, join us.
